Our Approach

Over its history, More Than A Score (MTAS) has served more than a thousand students, many of whom have gone on to attend some top universities including Yale, Harvard, Julliard, and more. Our students have also gone on to attend the perfect college for them, explore alternative paths to education, or take a gap year.

The student is our top priority, and we work tirelessly to support them and their unique vision for themselves. Our experience is that young adults are much easier to work with when they are consulted in the process of deciding their own future. We seek to help them find their own inner guidance rather than being another adult bossing them around. As a holistic practice, MTAS helps students across all their zones of engagement, offering referrals to other professionals when appropriate or requested. We help the whole child and the whole family, by providing support to them at a pivotal time in a young adult’s life.

The college counseling program is comprehensive and designed to last the duration of their Junior year and the beginning of their Senior year. Space is limited to only 12 students.

Our Advantage

What makes More Than A Score stand out from the rest of the college prep service providers is that we provide “Compassionate College Counseling” in order to reduce kids’ anxiety and take the pressure off the process for both the parent and the child.

You want your child to go to a good college and be high achieving, but the real concern is that you want them to succeed in life beyond and after college. And the questions are seemingly endless: How do we prepare children for what we ourselves do not even yet know?  There are so many uncertainties and variables: will school be in person or online? What kind of careers will be most valuable? Will the SAT/ACT test be mandatory? Will my finances hold up to support my child’s education?

We serve as a compassionate guide through the process and to help both you and your child navigate this new terrain with success while strengthening your relationship, building their skills, and supporting their unique contributions to the world.

As much as you want for them, we do too - for both of you.

Our Framework

Our framework is taken from the “hero’s journey”, the classic narrative structure of story telling wherein the hero goes on an epic quest. We’ve encompassed the aspects of the hero’s journey in a three-step process of Ready, Set, Go — preparation, application, and setting off. This framework allows into the process some levity and also engenders a feeling of heroism in the student. The world is definitely in need of more heroes.

The hero’s journey is also the formula for the essays. Please see the following pages for more information.
